This article examines the laws and regulations governing the transportation of modular homes within the State of New York on the New York Thruway and is available for use solely as a resource. Legal Limits:

  • Combination Length: 65 Feet

Thruway Permit Fee:

$21 plus highest class toll charge - valid one trip (24 hour maximum) - one way only.

Towing Vehicle:

Same as state regulation.

Escort(s):

  • If width is 12'1" to 12'6" a rear New York State certified escort vehicle is required and shall display warning signs, operational bar light on roof, headlights and other external lights shall be turned on.
  • In addition to the above requirement, vehicles 14' 1" to 15'0" wide require New York State certified escort vehicles shall display warning signs, operational bar light on roof, head lights and other external lights shall be turned on.
  • In addition to the above requirements, loads 15’1” or greater require Thruway Traffic Safety Supervision to coordinate and accompany the vehicle load’s movement on I-84.
  • Any vehicle/load over 18' wide requires a State Police Escort.
  • Vehicles 12'7" to 13'0" wide travel is restricted to Exit 15 (Suffern) to Exit 1 (Yonkers) on I-87, Cross Westchester Expressway Section (I-287), New England Section (I-95), and I-84 Section.
  • Vehicles 13'1" to 14'0", same as above, except locations restricted to Cross Westchester Expressway section (I-287), New England Section (I-95), and I-84 Section.
  • In addition to the flag and sign requirements for loads with lower lengths, Loads 80'0" to 99'11" require rear New York State certified escort vehicle required. This vehicle shall display warning signs, operational bar light on roof, headlights and other external lights shall be turned on.
  • Loads 100'0" or greater, in addition to the above, require front New York State certified escort vehicle also required.
  • New York State certified escort vehicles shall display warning signs, operational bar light on roof, head lights and other external lights shall be turned on.
  • Any vehicle/load 200'0" or greater in length requires a State Police Escort.

Signs:

  • "Oversized Load" sign on front of towing unit and rear of load. Same as state requirements.
  • If width is 8'7" to 12'0" there must be a warning sign attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.

Flags:

  • 8'7" to 12'0" wide require 18"X18" red or orange fluorescent flags on staffs at all corners at the extremities of the load or trailer.
  • 65'1" to 79'11" long vehicle loads require 18"X18" red or orange fluorescent flags on staffs on overhang and warning signs attached to the front and rear of the vehicle.

Lights:

Same as state regulation.

  • Running and headlights of towing vehicle and escort vehicle are required to be on low beam during movement.
  • Two amber lights, 6" minimum diameter, must be displayed from 2' to 5' above pavement, on the rear of all mobile homes over 12' wide or over 65' in length.
  • Escort requires two amber lights, 6" minimum diameter, displayed from 2' to 5' above pavement.
  • No regulations concerning lights on towing vehicle.

Hours of Travel:

Travel only during daylight hours.

Weather Conditions:

Same as state regulations.

No movement during periods of high winds, poor visibility or when highways are slippery due to ice or snow. State Police may order, at their discretion, removal of oversize loads from highways.

Miscellaneous Information:

  • Maximum speed limit is 55 mph and must be able to maintain 40 mph.
  • 10' maximum width at the Black Rock Barrier.
  • Over width loads proceeding north cannot exit at Harriman Interchange, Exit #16.
  • Parking allowed only in designated areas. Parking is prohibited in tandem trailer parking areas.
  • Thruway permit not valid on Newburgh-Beacon Bridge. Special permit required. For information call (914) 831-3700.
  • No mobile homes wider than 16’ are allowed on I-84.
